Most Americans Have Little Religious Knowledge

Do you know much about religion? If your answer is “Yes”, don’t worry, it’s the same for most of Americans.

The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life created a 32-question quiz and tested the religious knowledge of over 3,400 Americans by telephone. According to the survey most Americans have little to no knowledge about religion. More precisely, although the United States is one of the most religious developed countries in the world, “most Americans scored 50 percent or less on a quiz measuring knowledge of the Bible, world religions and what the Constitution says about religion in public life”.

But that’s not the only interesting fact. Here are more surprising findings of the survey:

First and my favorite: it’s not Catholics or Evangelicals who did best on the quiz; it’s atheists and agnostics! Amazing, right?

Who do you think got the best results? Thinking it was the Bible-belt Southerners? Wrong. They got the lowest scores.

Less than 50% of all Catholics know that when they take communion, the bread and wine represent the body and blood of Christ.

Only one person in three knows that a public school teacher has the right to teach a comparative religion class. On the bright side, nine out of ten know that teachers aren’t allowed by the Supreme Court to lead a class in prayer.

Last but not least, only eight of the 3,412 survey respondents got all 32 questions right. Six got them all wrong.

Surprising results, don’t you think?
