Lots of Pagans and Wicca followers find comfort and peacefulness in wearing certain jewelry pieces as amulets and protective talismans. By its nature, Wicca jewelry is magical. Everything that goes into the making of Wicca jewelry brings its own energy into it. I’m talking about the metals, the gem stones, the colors of the stones and symbols.

One of Halloween’s most popular symbols is without any doubt: the Jack O’Lantern. Carving pumpkins is a well known ritual of the Samhain season, loved by both children and adults. The Jack O’Lantern is created with a candle and a beautifully carved pumpkin. You put the candle or, for safety, a battery powered tealight into the pumpkin, and then you light it off to illuminate the carved out design. For some people, the more elaborated the carved design, the better. I prefer the classic smiley face version.

While most people know Samhain as Halloween, for Wicca followers and Pagans this is the time to honor and celebrate the ancestors. It is also the perfect time to contact the spirit world, since the veil between our world and the next is at its thinnest.

Ancient Temple to Mithras Discovered in France October 10, 2010

Just at the end of last month, archeologists have discovered a third-century sanctuary dedicated to the Indo-Iranian god Mithras near Angers, France. The discovery consists of a small, rectangular chapel, in which it is believed that worshippers celebrated the god and offered him sacrifices. The “tauroctony”, a typical bas-relief of the god Mithras wearing his Phrygian cap shows and slaughtering a bull, is also present in the sanctuary.

Very important announcement! One of the world’s greatest research libraries, the British Library has digitized 284 Greek manuscripts and made them available online. But that is not the only good news; thanks to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation ‘s grant, all the information is free.

Most Americans Have Little Religious Knowledge October 5, 2010

The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life created a 32-question quiz and tested the religious knowledge of over 3,400 Americans by telephone. According to the survey most Americans have little to no knowledge about religion. More precisely, although the United States is one of the most religious developed countries in the world, “most Americans scored 50 percent or less on a quiz measuring knowledge of the Bible, world religions and what the Constitution says about religion in public life”.
