The Secret Sounds of Stonehenge September 9, 2010
Posted by The Wayward Wiccan in : Witchy News , trackbackThe wonders of modern technology! Two brilliant researchers from the University of Huddersfield, UK, Bruno Fazenda and Rupert Hill, have recently developed a method of measuring a site’s acoustic fingerprint. What they do exactly is they “measure the impulse response of a location”, hoping that they can determine how it may have sounded thousand of years ago. Also, it seems that such actions can also help archeologists determine if placement was deliberate or not. Amazing!
If you’re wondering what kind of super sophisticated equipment they used for the Stonehenge experiment, you’ll be surprised to find out that they used balloons and a drum and microphones. That’s right; the researchers popped balloons and banged a drum trying to capture the “impulse response” of the ancient southern English stone circle.
They also, experimented with a full-size replica in Maryhill, Washington. At the replica’s site, the researchers were allowed to use powerful loudspeakers and special test signals. With the help of sophisticated technology they were able to get more accurate results.
Take a look at this video to see how the acoustic footprint of the world’s most famous prehistoric monument was measured. Do you notice the difference between the drum sounds from one part of Stonehenge to another?
