Religious Charity Can Fire Non-Christian Employees September 2, 2010

World Vision charity is now allowed to fire employees who are not sharing the organization’s faith. Because World Vision is a religious organization, it has been exempt from provisions of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Back in 2006, two women and one man were fired because they refused to attend daily prayer sessions. According to the ex-employees, the Christian concept of the Trinity is not something they believe in.  I just have to say that I don’t find this okay; it’s up to each person to decide when and where to pray. Don’t you agree?

Here’s what the organization wrote in a news release: “Our Christian faith has been the foundation of our work since the organization was established in 1950, and our hiring policy is vital to the integrity of our mission to serve the poor as followers of Jesus Christ.”

The ruling passed by a 2-1 vote. Dissenting judge Marsha S. Berzon “argues the exemption should not apply to non-profits whose primary mission is similar to secular organizations.” If you want to, you can read the entire ruling here.

What do you think of the news? Is it okay for a religious charity to fire workers because of their faith?
