Greek archaeologists discover Odysseus’ palace September 5, 2010
Posted by The Wayward Wiccan in : Random Ramblings , trackbackAfter reading about the recent discovery made by a team of archeologists from the University of Ioannina, I couldn’t help remember how much I enjoyed reading the Odyssey and the Iliad! I was so drawn in by the classical mythology as a child! But who wasn’t? Thanks to beautiful childhood memories, this news is even more exciting for me.
It seems that the hero of Homer’s epic poem was real according to the Greek archeologists who claim to have discovered the home of Odysseus! It’s been said that the location perfectly resembles Homer’s description of the palace.
Sure, not everyone agrees with the archeologists. Some received the news with skepticism, stating that Odysseus and his compatriots were nothing more that the product of homer’s imagination. Adriano La Regina, an Italian archeologist declared: “Whether this find has a connection with Ulysses or not is interesting up to a certain point, but more important is the discovery of the royal palace.”
Another researcher, Robert Bittlestone, said that Homer’s descriptions don’t resemble the island and that the location of Ithaca was in fact the Paliki peninsula, on the island of Cephalonia.
Well, regardless of what one or another says about the discovery, I still think this is a great discovery.
