Witch Killings in India August 3, 2010

Here’s some disturbing news. According to a recent study conducted by the Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra charity, 200 women accused of witchcraft are being killed yearly in poverty stricken villages in India. According to Avdhash Kaushal, chairman of the Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra, most victims were single women and widows. The punishment rituals went like this: women were forced to drink urine or even eat excrement in public and then paraded naked for the entire village to see them. This is unbelievably cruel and what’s even more disturbing is that a large number of these women commit suicide after being publicly humiliated.

Kaushal also said that “A law against killing in the name of witchcraft has been passed in the states of Jharkhand, Bihar and Chattisgarh, but it is rarely implemented and the highest punishment for committing such a barbaric act is only three months.”

It seems that in the last 15 years, more than 2500 women were lynched after being accused of witchcraft. The charity has petitioned India’s Supreme Court asking the chief justice to investigate the killings. Hopefully things will change for the better – news like this is incredibly sad.
