How did you spend your Friday the 13th? August 19, 2010
Posted by The Wayward Wiccan in : Random Ramblings , trackbackFor some people Friday the 13th is just a regular day of the week, nothing special about it, but for many it’s the scariest day of all. Why? No idea!
Did you know that the fear of Friday the 13th is called Paraskevidekatriaphobia. Here are some funny/interesting facts about what people tend to do on this day:
- large numbers of employees call in sick on Friday the 13th;
- most people fear that bad things will happened to them on this day and even refuse to leave their houses to prevent that;
- some even think that Friday the 13th is bad for health;
- lots of buildings don’t have a thirteen floor (it’s straight from twelve to fourteen) and in some stores you’ll never find aisle 13!
- regardless of what date it is, many sailors and fishermen believe that beginning a voyage on a Friday is nothing but bad luck;
- it is said that in 1306, King Philip of France had hundreds of Knights Templar arrested, tortured and executed on Friday, October 13.
But it’s not all about bad luck on this day, as some Wicca and Pagans consider Friday the 13th being a magical day, thanks to the following facts:
- Friday comes from the name Freyja, the Norse goddess of fertility;
- In ancient Egypt, number thirteen was associated with immortality. On the ladder to everlasting life there were thirteen steps, the thirteenth meaning the passage through death into eternal life;
- In Rome, it was a custom to have thirteen guests at a wedding;
- According to the Hebrew faith, when someone turns thirteen he/she is considered an adult;
- There are thirteen lunar cycles each year and that is why this number is often associated with the moon;
- Can you guess the traditional number of witches in a coven?
My Friday the 13th was just fine, nothing extraordinary happened, no bad luck, no strange events – just a regular Friday. What about you, how did you spend your Friday the 13th?
