Gods and Goddesses of the Fields August 6, 2010
Posted by The Wayward Wiccan in : Wiccan Words , trackbackLammastide is a time of abundance and fertility: we thresh the first grains, gardens are overflowing and trees are full with fruit. As you can probably imagine, in ancient times, this was the time to celebrate the agricultural significance of the season and honor deities of harvest. Here are some of the gods and goddesses of the fields:
1. Adonis. According to legends, Adonis dies and is later reborn. That is why he is the god of dying summer vegetation.
2. Ceres. Bet the name cereal just came to mind! Ceres is the Roman goddess of harvest and grain and in many cultures she is the one responsible for agricultural fertility.
3. Dagon. He was the god of fertility and agriculture, worshiped by the Amorites, a Semitic tribe.
4. Lugh. Because of this god’s role as a harvest god he is often associated with midsummer. He was also known as god of skill and talent distribution.
5. Mercury. He is the Roman god of commerce and grain trade and also associated with agricultural abundance.
6. Neper. This god became popular in Egypt during hard times of starvation and was later seen as a part of the cycle of life, death and rebirth.
7. Parvati. Today, Parvati is celebrated as the goddess of the harvest and protector of women in the annual Gauri Festival.
8. Ponoma. She is the Roman goddess associated with the flourishing of fruit trees.
9. Tammuz. He is a Sumerian god, associated with the cycle of life, death and rebirth.
