Freyja, the Goddess of Fertility and Abundance

Venerated by both women and men, Freyja was the Scandinavian goddess of fertility and abundance. She was one of the Norse deities of earth and water and sister of Freyr the god of farming, weather and also a phallic fertility god. People were reaching out to goddess Freyja for assistance in child birth, help with fertility problems, and help with marital problems or to provide them with abundance upon the land and sea. In some cultures, Freyja is god’s Frey wife and just like him she is associated with material abundance and wealth.

The goddess is well known for her necklace, called Birisingamen. The magnificent necklace represents the fire of the sun and was acquired from the dwarfs by sleeping with them. She is also known for her cloak which gave her the power to transform into a bird, and for her cats driven chariot.

Along with being the goddess of abundance and fertility, Freyja is also known as the goddess of war and battle. Because of her connection with childbirth and her power of transforming into a bird, the goddess was similar to Frigg, a Norse goddess of love and fertility. According to myths, Frigg had the knowledge of every person’s destiny.
