Cleopatra Portrait on Papyrus

Very exciting news for all you Cleopatra fans and admirers (including me)!

A team of divers excavating the ruins of Cleopatra’s palace, located off the coast of Alexandria, since the early 1990’s has recently discovered “everything from coins and everyday objects to colossal granite statues of Egypt’s rulers and sunken temples dedicated to their gods.”

Alexandria’s Royal headquarters were discovered in 1996 and it is said that many of its riches are completely intact and perfectly preserved by the salt water! Ashraf Abdel – Raouf of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, who is also part of the team, made the following statement: “It’s as it was when it sank.”  This makes me want to see the discovery even more!

I love it how thanks to modern technologies, more and more stunning discoveries are being made and things from the past are unveiled. After excavating one of the richest underwater archaeological sites in the world for two decades, the team has finally retrieved amazing artifacts from the last dynasty to rule over ancient Egypt before the Roman Empire annexed it in 30BC.

The colossal discovery, along with other artifacts, will be on display at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute until January 2nd 1011! The exhibition titled Cleopatra: the Search for the Last Queen of Egypt will surely draw the interest of many visitors. Will you go see it?
