MRFF Challenges Army Hospital Emblem May 30, 2010

According to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation the cross and religious motto of an Army Hospital in Colorado violate the constitutional requirement for separation of church and state. They also state that the emblem should be removed. Here’s what the emblem says “Pro deo et humanitate” or “For God and humanity.” As much as I’m for separating religion from government, I really don’t see how this is much different from having “In God We Trust” on our money or the Pledge of Allegiance’s “One nation, under God” passage.

While Mikey Weinstein of the MRFF points out that the “reference to the Crusades could embolden U.S. enemies who want to portray the war on terror as a Christian war on Islam”, Lt. Col. Steve Wollman said the cross is “both an emblem of mercy and a symbol dating to the Middle Ages, when pilgrims carried a cross with a spiked base to mark the site of a camp.” Weinstein also declared that the complaint was filed on behalf of 43 anonymous people at Fort Carson. Of the 43, it is said that 29 are Protestants or Catholics.

Since the cross and motto have been in place for decades and the Army said that it is just a symbol of mercy I really don’t think this is such a big deal. What bothers me is that if it were a pentagram instead of a cross, there’d be a huge uproar and it would be taken down immediately. What do you think about it? Do you see the emblem as a violation of the separation of church and state? I view this as being about the same as the Red Cross’ symbol, myself.
