Beltane Crafts: Magical Weaving and Braiding May 15, 2010

Taking a step back to the Beltane celebrations, since they (in my opinion!) should never end, I decided to talk more about things you can do to brighten your home in Springtime. Handcrafts are often used as a magical process and some people are saying that they are able to astral travel while weaving and braiding. From my point of view, this type of craftwork is a meditative exercise, a way to let your mind wonder and just relax.  You hands are doing all the work for you.

Since it is Spring already, you can easily incorporate long grasses, willow wands, vines, fresh flowers or onions into your projects. I’m all about the flowers so you can imagine my favorite thing is to braid beautiful floral crowns. They easy to make and all you need are flowers, colored ribbons and some pipe cleaners.

Another easy to make craft is a Grapevine Pentacle to hang on your wall or on your door. You just have to be a bit more patient as it takes more of your time. All you need are several grapevines, thin to medium thickness. They have to be pliable so make sure the vines are freshly picked.

A great craft for both adults and kids to make is the Moon Braid. All you need are three ribbons in black, white and silver – each one representing a phase of the moon. If you honor a particular lunar goddess, you should offer her a prayer while you are crafting the Moon Braid.

When onions are in the season you can create an Onion Braid which will serve as a protective charm and for spell work you can handcraft a Witch’s Ladder. What are your favorite Beltane crafts?
