What’s the point of prayer? April 2, 2010

Wiccan or not, this question seems to be on a lot of people’s mind: What is the purpose of praying?

There are some (like me) who see prayer as a way of relief and some that see it like a total waste of time. Those who see it as an action with no calling for usually think this way: “If the gods are so divine, so powerful, don’t they know already what our wishes, our problems are? Do we really need to tell them and ask for help?”  Well, you kind of do need to tell them. Just think of it this way: sometimes we don’t know for sure what we really want so it may be hard for the gods to know exactly what it is that we want.

From my point of view, prayer can only make you feel good. I strongly suggest that if you feel the need to pray, go ahead and do it. There comes a time in everyone’s life when divine intervention is needed and if you don’t ask for it, there is no way to receive it.

If you are wondering who to pray to, it’s easy: you can pray to anyone or anything you’d like. Some people pray to spirits and some choose to pray to their ancestors. All of this is perfectly acceptable. Whatever makes you feel better, say I! Some may disagree with that sentiment, especially those who follow a more narrow spiritual path than I.

Ultimately, I feel that prayer is a very personal thing. You can choose to pray loudly or silently, in your room, in church or wherever you feel like praying. Also, there is no perfect time for praying, pray when you need to. I strongly believe that someone is listening!
