Beltane – Spring’s Festival of Fire and Fertility April 19, 2010
Posted by The Wayward Wiccan in : Wiccan Words , trackbackThe countdown for Beltane has begun for all the Pagans and Wiccans living in the Northern Hemisphere. There are only a couple of days until the first day of May when the celebration of fertility and renewal begins.
Usually the festivities start on the last nigh of April and depending on everyone’s traditions there are a number of ways to celebrate this Sabbat. Here are some of the rituals and traditions you might want to try by yourself or alongside fellow Pagans:
- Maypole Dance – all you need is a pole, colored ribbons and lots of friends who are looking to have a good time.
- The Beltane Bonfire Rite – this is a tradition that goes back hundred of years and implies the use of a bonfire, a couple to play the parts of May Queen and God of Forest, drums and lots of noise makers.
- The Family Abundance Rite for Beltane – this time what you need is an altar decorated with symbols of the spring, a small pot for each participant to the celebration, one bowl of dirt, seeds for your favorite flowers and herbs, a cup of water, a piece of paper and a pen and a fire.
Of course, no Beltane celebration is complete without a proper feast. The best foods you can celebrate with are the ones honoring earth’s fertility: soups, Scottish bannocks, early summer salads, fertility bread or green man cake just to name a few delicious dishes.
Also, don’t forget to decorate your home! Be crafty and creative and use beautiful flower crowns, Maypole altar centerpieces, May Day Cone Baskets or Beltane Fire Incense.
