Want to learn more about Wicca? March 11, 2010
Posted by The Wayward Wiccan in : Wiccan Words , trackbackSo you have just discovered that Wicca is the right path for you but you have no idea what to do, where to go, who to ask for information – basically you want to but don’t know how to practice it and how to incorporate its beliefs in your life. That’s where I come in. I did a little bit of research and this is what I found out:
- You can take an online class! Since there is a lot of information to take in and it may be somehow overwhelming I believe that this option is the best. Plus it’s a comfortable one too: each class will be sent to your e-mail box. All you have to do is look for an on line course that teaches topics like basic concepts of Wicca (very important to know), Wiccan Celebrations, deities and prayers, the art of Craft and so on. If you are interested, here’s a very useful link.
- Beginners can also find a lot of helpful information on Wiccan/ Pagan forums. This is also a great option because forums are places where you can find both beginners like you with whom you can exchange opinions and also “experienced” Wiccans that will surely help you cope with everything that’s going on in your life.
- Go to an online Wiccan Library – this is another great place to get started. You can find everything you need to know as long as you do your homework in advance and find out what books are worth reading. In order to obtain that information look for book reviews and author interviews and profiles. To make your work easier I also did a bit of research and it seems that these are the top 5 books you should read:
- Adler, Margot: Drawing Down the Moon
- Buckland, Raymond: Complete Book of Witchcraft
- Cunningham, Scott: Wicca – A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner
- Currot, Phyllis : Witch Crafting
- Gardner, Gerald: Witchcraft Today
Still, don’t take my word for it and make sure you do your own research. I really believe that if you are going to make a big change in your life you absolutely need to be well informed!
- Make a study plan – It works any time you are trying to learn something new so it will surely work this time too.
- Book reading and self teaching are good but not enough. A very important step is to get connected with real people who share your interest in Wicca or Paganism. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for the help of people that have a solid background as Wicca practitioners.

Um, just a couple of points…
Don’t believe everything you read online. There’s some awful rubbish out there.
Don’t believe everything that people tell you. They may be wanting to use you for their own egos.
Check that it rings true with your personal ethics & values before you follow something that someone tells you. Otherwise you’ll have a hard time. Equally, be open to new ideas – your prejudices may be getting in the way.
Don’t rush to join the first group you come across – use these guidelines first; Phil Hine’s articles on group dynamics – I especially recommend Approaching Groups and Checklist for a well-working group
oh and it’s never called Wiccanism
it’s called Wicca
Wow, thanks for the heads up on Wiccanism/Wicca… no idea how I missed that. Guess my puny brain just made the assumption.. Paganism, Judaism, Hinduism – why not Wiccanism? Fixed my post.
Appreciate the links. I’ve only had positive experiences with fellow practitioners, maybe that makes me too trusting… very good info there, though. I was lucky enough to find a great, laid back group to spend time with – fits my speed perfectly!
