Used today as a symbol of faith for many Wiccans, the pentacle or the pentagram was symbolically used in ancient Greece and Babylonia. The five points of the pentacle symbolize the five elements: Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Aether or Spirit. It is said that the fifth element: Spirit is the one that unites the other four.

You may be wondering why I’m so down on St. Patty’s Day, but there IS a reason: While most people just associate St. Patrick’s Day with parades, green things and alcohol, it’s a much more serious affair in Ireland. It also has special meaning for us Pagans. Most everybody knows that St. Patrick is hailed as being the saint who drove all the “evil snakes” out of Ireland.

Wiccans just like many other Neopagans hold religious celebrations of “Ostara” (the date is 21st March) on the Spring Equinox. It is said that the origin of the word is from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring associated with flowers and springtime. Her name also gives us the name Easter along with Ostara. Still, no one knows for sure if this goddess existed or not. Regardless, today she is associated with Pagan and Wiccan customs and she is connected to the Wiccan celebration of Ostara.

At first, to me it seemed that the teacher was only trying to be fair. The man stated that he previously told another student that he can’t build a cross in shop class and that he also doesn’t want any religious symbols in the shop. All this is very reasonable but as we advance with the reading we come across this statement he makes about Wicca: “It scares me. I’m a Christian… This witchcraft stuff – it’s terrible for our kids. It takes kids away from what they know, and leads them to a dark and violent life. We spend millions of tax dollars trying to save kids from that.”

Margot Adler’s words really are words of wisdom and that is why I choose this quote to begin with. We can all learn from what she’s saying and all try to live in peace. We should learn once and for all that religion isn’t something that has to tear us apart: if we come to think about it we are all the same: We have families, jobs, hopes, and dreams….We are real. We laugh, we cry…We have a sense of humor. It is up to each and every single one of us to decide how to live out lives and what to believe in.
